The new feature will be available in selected Family Hub refrigerator models and was officially presented at CES 2026. It will operate within Samsung’s Family Hub ecosystem. Voice control works via the Bixby assistant: after issuing a command, the refrigerator doors automatically open to their full range, allowing hands-free access to the interior.
In addition to voice commands, Samsung is also introducing touch-based control without using a handle. Users can tap the door with their hand or the back of their hand to activate the automatic opening mechanism. The feature is designed for situations when hands are occupied—such as during cooking—as well as for people with limited mobility.
Cooking is where this function seems especially useful. Thanks to voice commands, users will be able to operate the refrigerator without worrying about dirtying it or struggling to open the door with one hand while holding, for example, a prepared dish in the other.
The mechanism requires the use of motors and safety sensors that control door movement and prevent opening if an obstacle is detected. Samsung has not disclosed detailed technical specifications regarding drive strength or energy consumption, but emphasizes that the solution is part of its broader accessibility strategy for home appliances. It is worth noting, however, that this adds another moving component to the refrigerator’s construction—and a potential part that could fail.
Samsung has not yet announced a global rollout date for the feature. According to information shared by the company, the solution will be introduced gradually, initially in selected smart refrigerator models. Pricing and exact market launch dates have not been disclosed. It should also be assumed that the feature will not be available for existing refrigerators due to the lack of dedicated actuators.
